What more could a fifty-year old man with a nice wife want out of life? A winning baseball team? Eternal youth? A sexy temptress? In Damn Yankees, Joe Boyd gets a triple.
In this modern-day Faust story, Joe sells his soul to the devil, Mr. Applegate, for the chance to help his beloved but hapless Washington Senators baseball team. Transformed into a young man, Joe becomes a baseball star and the Senators are well on their way to beating those damn Yankees. However, Joe misses his old life and wants out of the bargain. That’s when Mr. Applegate brings in Lola, the seductress with a sense of humor, in hopes of making Joe forget the escape clause in his contract.
Damn Yankees hits a musical grand slam with everything from touching love songs to hoedowns. Applegate does a soft-shoe as he fondly recalls disasters in “ Those Were the Good Old Days.” Lola tangos in “ Whatever Lola Wants” and mambos in “ Who’s Got the Pain. “You Gotta Have Heart” is a show-stopping spoof of the locker room pep talk that has become an American classic.
Based on Douglass Wallop’s best-selling novel, The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant, the 1955 musical swept the Tony awards. Gwen Verdon (Lola) and Ray Walston (Applegate) reprised their roles in the 1958 screen version. Jerry Lewis made his Broadway debut in the 1994 stage revival.
